Introducing the Inaugural Hugh and Shawn LeSure MYSP Alumni Award
Both Hugh and Shawn were remarkable musicians, but more importantly, they were deeply thoughtful people who used their gifts to uplift others. Hugh was known for his intellect, leadership, and passion for mentorship, always encouraging those around him to think more deeply and grow. Shawn, an accomplished performer and dedicated educator, shared his love of music with warmth, creativity, and generosity, creating spaces where others felt seen, supported, and inspired.
Together, they embody the very best of MYSP: musical excellence and a belief in the power of music to connect, to teach, and to serve.
We invite the MYSP community to nominate alumni from any graduating year (1967–2025) for this award. Nominees do not need to be professional musicians. We welcome those from all career fields and life paths who have carried their love of music into meaningful contributions in their communities and beyond. Alumni do not need to reside in Memphis to be eligible.
Nominations are due by April 27. The selected recipient will be honored at the Season Finale Concert on Sunday, May 10. Nominees will be notified of their nomination, and MYSP will communicate directly with the selected recipient regarding their availability to attend the May 10 presentation. Attendance is not mandatory to receive this honor.
In addition to this award, MYSP and the LeSure family will also establish a scholarship in Hugh and Shawn’s name to support current students. More details will be shared at the Season Finale Concert.
Through these efforts, we celebrate not only the lasting impact of Hugh and Shawn, but also the many MYSP alumni who continue to make a difference in their communities and beyond.
The nomination form can be found below. Please email Jenny Davis with any questions (executivedirector@myspmusic.org).
The Memphis Youth Symphony Program is honored to introduce the inaugural Hugh and Shawn LeSure Alumni Award, established in memory of two extraordinary musicians whose lives and legacies continue to inspire our community.
Named in honor of MYSP cellist Hugh R. LeSure and MYSP violinist Shawn LeSure, this award recognizes alumni who exemplify the artistry, curiosity, compassion, and commitment to service that defined their lives and time in MYSP.
