The String Orchestra is the most advanced of MYSP's three string orchestras, bringing together accomplished string players from across the Mid-South.
Conducted by Yonitte Ryger, students explore challenging string orchestra repertoire spanning baroque masterworks to contemporary compositions. The ensemble emphasizes advanced techniques including refined bowing, vibrato, shifting, and nuanced musicality. Students work on developing strong section leadership skills and the ability to perform independently within the ensemble setting.
The String Orchestra presents 4 concerts annually with Sunday rehearsals at the University of Memphis from September through May. This ensemble provides a rigorous environment where advancing string players refine their technique and deepen their musical understanding in preparation for Youth Symphony or Repertory Orchestra. Many String Orchestra members excel in All-West and All-State auditions and continue on to advance to MYSP's flagship ensembles.
